“Like brother and sister”: how Martin found his confidence again at home with ilarna

Two hands clasped in a comforting, supportive grip between an older person and a caregiver.

When Martin came home from hospital in July 2025, he was living with Multiple Sclerosis and diabetes and needed someone with him full time. Through ilarna, he found Princess, an ilarna Personal Assistant, who moved in on his first day back.

From hospital to home

Coming home after a stay in hospital can be a difficult adjustment, especially when you need support around the clock. Martin used ilarna to find the right person, and connected with Princess, an ilarna Personal Assistant, who was there from day one.

“Princess has given me a high standard of support at all times and has been very attentive to my individual needs, both physically and emotionally. Mostly, Princess will offer me what I need before I ask.”

Small changes, big difference

Princess spotted that Martin was struggling to get in and out of the shower safely, and suggested a wet room. She arranged a ramp so he could get back into his garden. She introduced an over-chair table that made mealtimes and using his tablet easier day to day.

She also contacted his MS Support Group to look into funding for the wet room, and help is now on its way.

“I now have a ramp to enable me access to my garden so that I can once again enjoy being in my garden. My friends and family have noticed a big improvement in my quality of life since Princess arrived.”

Safety, health and daily routine

Princess helps Martin with exercises each morning, at a pace that works for him. She cooks fresh meals at home, keeping his diabetes in mind when planning what they eat. Since Princess arrived, Martin has only fallen once, and she called the paramedics straight away.

She goes with him to medical appointments, physiotherapy, church and his MS Support Group, all of which matter to Martin and keep him connected to the people around him.

More than support: genuine companionship

Princess and Martin watch DVDs and musicals together, share conversation, and she makes his family and friends feel welcome when they visit. His family have noticed the difference.

“I know I am very lucky to have Princess as my Personal Assistant and I am grateful that ilarna connected us, as we get on very well, like brother and sister, and look after each other.”

Martin is back in his garden, back at church, and back to feeling like himself at home.
